The end of Bid4ACure 2009 has come. As the dust continues to settle, rear-ends become unglued to their various chairs, chatter slows and memories seep into the crevices to take their positions for posterity, all eyes turned toward the grand total. Of course, our main goal is the raising of funds for the American Diabetes Association and Diabetes UK, and we can say without a doubt.. this was by far our greatest venture yet. Bid4ACure 2009 raised... drumroll please..... L$1,785,236! A job well done by the outstanding Bid Team, Leaders and Sponsors. Without all of you, Bid4ACure would not be a reality.

The time has come for the much anticipated Bid4ACure Date Auction. Last year's event brought us up and over the L$1,000,000 mark and all but crashed the sim with all the avvies present. The bidding frenzies were a sight to behold. This year, we begin the journey already over the L$1,000,000 mark with a wild mix of residents, professionals and bigger than life celebrities (even if only in their own minds - Ha!) up on the auction block.

Make sure to get there with plenty of time to wander the beauty of the Island through the meandering walkways, view the statues and aviary wonderment of the Island itself. Bidding is normally a fast and furious adventure, so grab your seat early and don't miss out on some of the funniest, intelligent, beautiful, skilled and downright gracious residents of SL!

A's Story

Hello! My name is A, and I am a senior in high school graduating with honors this year. I am a normal 18-year-old girl like any other with one exception: I have Type 1 Diabetes. I have had this disease for the past 9 years and was diagnosed with it at the age of 9. At the time, I was extremely thirsty and had lost a lot of weight very quickly, and I could not stay awake. I was very sick, and the doctors told my parents I was on the verge of falling into a coma. Insulin saved my life. It was a scary time, and my family and I have been praying for a cure ever since.

Since being diagnosed in 2000, I have had a lot to learn about giving myself insulin shots, checking my blood sugar, and counting carbohydrates. Come to think of it, I don't ever feel like I have truly learned the trick to managing Diabetes because what works one day does not always work the next. My life is a constant balancing act. Every day I take 5 shots of insulin and prick my fingers 5 to 7 times in order to test my blood sugar and make adjustments. I have to constantly monitor my blood sugar so that it does not get too high or too low because either situation can be very dangerous to my health even leading to coma or death. For me, keeping my blood sugar within normal levels is always the goal, but one that I can never truly attain.

Managing Diabetes is very important to me because it opens up so many potential problems down the road if I don't do a good job of it. I have a lower projected lifespan by 14 years, and I am more likely to suffer blindness, amputation, heart disease, kidney disease, nerve damage, stroke, and heart attack. It is scary to think about any of these things happening to me, and I just hope I can do enough to make sure I stay healthy.

Every year more than 13,000 children are diagnosed with this dreadful disease. Even though insulin is saving lives, it is not a cure for Diabetes, nor does it prevent its eventual and devastating complications. There is some good news, though. For the first time, scientists are predicting that we CAN expect to see a cure well within our lifetime!

Bid4aCure is a virtual effort in Second Life led by real life people to reach out and make a difference in the lives of millions around the world who have diabetes of any kind. In 2008, Bid4aCure raised over a million Lindens to Benefit Diabetes Research and subsequently the real-world amounts of £1000.00 was donated to Diabetes UK and US$2,281.00 was donated to the American Diabetes Association. What an amazing application of the virtual world to make a positive difference to so many people afflicted with this terrible disease!

I was diagnosed with borderline diabetes 2 weeks before I got married. No wonder I couldn't seem to lose any weight. My story is a lot easier then some. I don't have to take shots like my grandmother, I don't have to poke my finger everyday like my Dad. I just have to be careful what I eat, and make sure I exercise. When I go out with my girlfriends, I'm the one who orders the water instead of the soda, and I'm the one who doesn't get dessert. It still amazes me that with diabetes being as prevalent as it is today, when new people find out, they look at me with pity. That's why it meant so much to me to find a group in SL who's mission is to eradicate this disease, and that's why I'm doing my part to find a cure. Not because my personal life has been so overwhelmingly hard because of this disease, but because other's are, and I don't deal well with pity. Diabetes isn't who I am... it's what i have. I'm a student, an SL addict, a photographer, a DJ, a club owner, and a loving wife. That's who I am... and I refuse to let a disease stop me before we can stop it.

Amazing! This is how we would describe the Goods and Services Auction Event held Sunday, June 14th on Bid4ACure Event Island. The Bid4ACure Team worked into the wee hours of the morning setting up the Island with all the Goods and their pedestals scattered about the Island. Ms. Annabelle Babii provided her expertise in laying out a bricked walkway, which would lead prospective bidders around to the various items. Center stage was the Bidding Arena provided by
Mrs. Argus Collingwood for the Services Auction.

Despite a few hiccups and rather lengthy bidding battles for two live acts, the event was a complete and total success! The Goods Silent Auction brought in a total of L$56,811 and the Services Auction took in an astounding L$692,892. Simply AMAZING!

The Bid4ACure Team would like to extend a big THANK YOU to everyone involved. From the spectators, to the bidders, and of course the winners, we thank you from the bottoms of our hearts. Without all of you, this success would have not been realized. As of 9 pm SLT Sunday evening, our Grand Overall Donation total was L$925,754.

We look forward to our next major event on Saturday, June 27th - Benefit Concert beginning at 12 pm SLT.

She is a caring, dedicated, professional DJ, who is invested in making your event a total success and one who thrives on the interaction with her crowd and their requests. Which has built her a faithful loyal following.

Attended four (4) years at DJ Mix Academy (DMA) in Boston MA. DJ'd at the school and at Phoenix Radio for two (2) years.

One of the hardest working musicians in SL, Joaquin never puts the guitar down. He is forever focused on giving one hundred percent to every performance. His wide range playlist includes smooth jazz, rock, tango, milonga, candombe and much more.
His magnetic charm is as appealing as his musical talent, and managed to build a very successful fan base. He has a very warm interaction with the audience, always ready for dedications and requests.

With the Official Kick-Off Party under our belts and a whopping L$24,913 earned, bringing our Bid4ACure 2009 kick-off total to approximately L$105,000 we are ready to get down to business. This week we will be profiling the goods that will be available during the Silent Auction and highlighting the fantastic Live Artists and DJs from around the grid going up on the block for bidding during the Services Auction. These two auctions will be held on the Bid4ACure Island (slurl to be posted the morning of the auction) on Sunday, June 14th, beginning at 11 am SLT. Remember, donations syringes are placed all around the grid. If it is L$1 or L$1,000, we are thankful for them all. When you see one, drop in your spare change and help us Stop the Shots!

Hi! My name is Hare Fadoodle and I am a diabetic.

I was diagnosed in 1985. Since that time, I've seen many changes. Changes in testing, education and public awareness. Most exciting are the new discoveries that are being made every day through research. I have an optimism that I have not felt in years.

I'm delighted to be a part of Bid4ACure here in Second Life. What a marvelous mesh between the real world and the virtual.

The American Diabetes Association and Diabetes UK are such worthy causes. Please be generous and help us make a difference.

Hi, my name is Gussie and I am a diabetic, but I consider myself one of the lucky ones, as so far I am shot free. It seems like I have been a diabetic all my life. Many people have heard about diabetes but not many really know what it is like to have to watch what you eat everyday. It can be a constant battle to make sure that you eat the right foods and have a positive attitude, sometimes you just want to eat a big 'ol piece of chocolate cake. I feel very special that all of you have taken the time to want to be part of this wonderful fund raising event to help to find a cure and please be assured that I am honored that you would all take the time to care about finding a cure. Until there is a cure we must all work together and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for all your support.

What a party! Thank you to everyone in attendance. Those of you not there this evening, you missed out on one extra large kick off party!

Friendly Fire kicked off the night in grand fashion, as always with great live music and their own brand of prodding the audience into participation and debauchery. The crowd shouted along in choruses of "Get up, stand up, dust yourself off.. we're going to do it again" and "thong, thong, thong." Case Munro and Mackenzie Rasmussen treated us with a special song dedicated to Bid4Acure.

DJ Jocelyn Sands took the helm next, treating the crowd to a fine mix of old standards and modern top hits. Many were heard reminiscing about the good old days. Never one to disappoint, DJ Joce kept the banter up in chat and between sets, leaving the crowd wanting more. Several noobs cut their proverbial teeth this evening to the great spins provided by DJ Joce. More than one stating they would keep their eyes and ears open for news of more shows.

The Official Bid4ACure Kick-Off Party was a complete success. At the end of the evening, when the numbers were crunched for the last time, our collective hearts raced upon hearing the grand total for the evenings donations. The Bid4ACure staff would like to thank everyone in attendance and all those who dug deep into their pockets, repeatedly "hitting" the syringe with donations.

The final total during tonights combined live sets is... (insert drumroll) L$ 24,913! This brings our starting grand total amount to approximately L$105,000. WoW!

June - Bid4ACure Month!

Today starts our Bid4ACure month full of activities and events. Each week, this blog will highlight a resident's story of surviving with diabetes, the week's event and items related to each event. Make sure to check back frequently as new items are added.

Resident Highlight: Judristen Ames

I met up with Judristen about a year and a half ago in Second Life. Always a presence at various functions and as friendly as could be. If it were not for Bid4ACure and my involvement in it this year, I would have never known the story behind the man, nor how incredibly brave and strong his soul happens to be. On the day of my discussion with Jud, for this piece, he had biked 7 miles and seemingly as full of energy as your average energizer bunny.

In Jud's words...

I became a diabetic when I was 26. That was in '96. I got very sick and I had all the classic symptoms sudden very fuzzy vision, was terribly thirsty and had the need to urinate like every 20 minutes. I finally went in after a month of this.. (stubborn) They gave me a blood test and my blood sugars were 890! The doctor was surprised I wasn't in a coma. I was put in the hospital for 3 days. It was hard. Hard to give up all the stuff I loved. I struggled with the control part for years.

But now I'm getting back on track. I quit smoking a year and 3 months ago. That's helped immensely! It was hard. But I had a great motivating factor, my mom lost her voice box and almost died. Controlling it is a battle. But I don't get depressed about having the disease anymore. It is what it is. I deal with it now the best I can.

Jocelyn told me she was going to do the Bid4aCure two years ago and I was flattered. Bid4acure is the kindest thing Jocelyn ever did for me. And all of the people who contributed has been so touching.

What is your hope for the future of the in world Bid insofar as fund raising and/or education?

I hope they raise more than last year. I believe everyone should be educated about it. Mainly, because for the diabetic it's hard when people tell them how they SHOULD eat and live. People who don't have it need to understand how hard it is to stay on track. It's like walking on a tight rope. Education is important for the diabetic as well. They need to be brave and face up to their disease, even the scary stuff. And some of the stuff is scary.

As you may be aware, millions across the world suffer from types I and II diabetes. Diabetes now affects nearly 24 million people in the United States and 2.3 million in the United Kingdom. What you many not know is that between the two countries, alone, almost 60 million people suffer from what is termed "pre-diabetes." This condition places these persons at a greater risk of diabetes. In addition, reports span the globe regarding the huge increases of diabetes in children. Today, it is not unusual for every second person you meet to be affected by diabetes, whether they have a family member or friend who has diabetes or they, themselves have diabetes. Diabetes can and does (due to lack of education) lead to a multitude of complications including stroke, heart disease and kidney disease amongst others. Through our donation kiosks and special events throughout the month of June, we aim to raise funds to assist in the research toward a cure and education for the public in regard to diabetes.

Bid4aCure is in its third year, having raised over 300 thousand lindens in 2007 and $1,070,277 lindens in 2008. Donations were placed in Diabetes Syringe donation boxes, which were topped with a stop sign that read, “Stop the Shots.” These donation boxes were cleverly crafted by Adrian Harbinger, one of the auctionees and the real life husband of Jocelyn Sands.

As with last year’s drive, as soon as Bid4aCure 2009 was announced, Jocelyn received help from many supporters and was told by many that they were personally affected by the disease – either themselves or a loved one. Many have stepped forward to allow donation syringes to be placed on their land, to offer their products and services up for auction and to participate in the date auction, which is the crowning event of the Bid4aCure Drive.

The Date Auction, which for two years running has been the highlight of the charity drive, took in over 650,000 Lindens in 2008. There was an air of excitement on Sunday, June 29th as the auctionees assembled at the Escape Club on Journey Island, each dressed in a manner that was unique and displayed the best of their avatar’s character. Every person had chosen a song to be auctioned to and, as they stepped up to the auction block, an introduction was read by DJ Jocelyn Sands. Dates were auctioned off that day, with bids ranging from a few thousand up to $58,000L. With the support of her all volunteer team of planners and workers the final result of the Bid4ACure 2008 Campaign was £1,000 donated to the Diabetes UK and $2,281 donated to the American Diabetes Association. The entire team was overwhelmed and proud to have achieved their target for this year and, when asked to comment, they said, “Two Million in 2009!”

This year the Bid4ACure Donation Syringes will be set out across the grid beginning May 17th and Special Events are set to begin on Sunday, June 7th at 5 p.m. SL (EST) at Echo Echo. Our goal for Bid4ACure for 2009 is 2,000,000L. Make sure to check back with us for the full listing of events, syringe donation locations and sponsors. The tentative schedule listing is as follows:
